BEA Bright Spot: Abstracted Portraits

Bronx visual arts writing 10th grade Bronx Envision Academy 9th grade teacher teaching artists BEA cut out poetry poetry CWPNYCAfter a Visual Inquiry on Egon Schele’s self portrait/contour drawing, 9th and 10th grade students at BEA teamed up to create portraits of each other in 60 seconds with the directives: #1. Do not look at your paper and #2 do not pick up the pen, to create a portrait with one continual line.
The images created were fun and somewhat abstract. And the reveal was fun for the students and the Teaching Artists! After several passes, students choose their favorite blind contour drawing and add contrasting color to the shapes created by the interesting lines.
All students enjoyed this exercise, even the most resistant student eventually wanted to participate. Success was embedded in the practice, everyone created a unique abstracted portrait.
