At Bronx Envision Academy, the 9th and 10th grade students created artist statements with teaching artists Pamella Allen and Jashua Sa-Ra. After a Visual Inquiry on a segment of Kendrick Lamar’s 2016 Grammy performance, students received print-outs of the lyrics from two songs featured in the video clip. Students then collaborated as teams [with each student adding at least one line] to cut and re-organize KL’s song lyrics into a new work that begins to describe who they are/ their artist statement.

There were quite a few amazing poems in this class. James and Darley stood out because they are two of the quietest students in Ms. Browns class; it is just incredible to see the clear message, absolute honesty, and risk taking in their poem.
