Bronx visual arts writing 10th grade Bronx Envision Academy 9th grade teacher teaching artists BEA cut out poetry poetry CWPNYCAt Bronx Envision Academy, the 9th and 10th grade students created artist statements with teaching artists Pamella Allen and Jashua Sa-Ra. After a Visual Inquiry on a segment of Kendrick Lamar’s 2016 Grammy performance, students received print-outs of the lyrics from two songs featured in the video clip. Students then collaborated as teams [with each student adding at least one line] to cut and re-organize KL’s song lyrics into a new work that begins to describe who they are/ their artist statement.
There were quite a few amazing poems in this class. James and Darley stood out because they are two of the quietest students in Ms. Browns class; it is just incredible to see the clear message, absolute honesty, and risk taking in their poem.
