IMPACT
Community-Word Project will reach over 3,000 kids in schools and libraries with critical art instruction in academic year 2020-2021. We measure the impact and the outcomes of our teaching with both quantitative and qualitative assessments of student attitudes, behavior, and academic writing samples. We are determined to continually optimize our programs.
Each student who participates in our in-school residencies completes narrative writing samples at the beginning and end of the program. Additionally, pre- and post-program, students assess themselves on a variety of measures of emotional and intellectual confidence and progress.
"I learned how to write well, how to use juicy words, and how to make my story better. I learned that a good writer goes over their story again and again until they make it better." - 3rd Grader, P.S. 132, Washington Heights
Our art programs achieve statistically significant gains in 5 student outcomes - Community, Emotional Intelligence, Literacy, Critical Thinking, and Creative Thinking. Measures of literacy, emotional intelligence, and cultural awareness were consistent and reliable across multiple indicators.
The 2016-2017 data demonstrates the effectiveness of our programs:
Collaborative Arts Residencies
- Based on pre- to post-program student survey results, the greatest gains were in literacy, writing revision, and creativity with gains as large as 35% in writing revision skills
- Survey of students demonstrated an overall positive change of 7% in intended attitude outcomes and writing revision skills
- At the start of the 2016-2017 academic year, 77% of classroom teachers indicated that they had been "very satisfied" with previous CWP residencies. And the end of the academic year, 89% of classroom teachers indicated they were "very satisfied
Teaching Artist Project
- 89% of TAP alumni survey participants reported they were "highly prepared" to enter the field of arts education
- Trainees reported large knowledge gains in the areas of Curriculum and Lesson Plan Design, Creative Process, Teaching Practice, and familiarity with Academic Standards such as Common Core
- 70% of TAP Cohort Elective Seminar attendees rated their workshops as "critical" to their professional development
Testing Protocols
Our outcomes are consistent with the results reported in the President's Committee on the Arts and the Humanities, Reinvesting in Arts Education: Winning America's Future Through Creative Schools. which cites studies showing that arts education benefits reading and math skills, reduces dropout rates, and improves academic achievement.
Analyzed surveys are from randomly drawn samples. Pre- and post-program writing samples are rated in a blind process. Data from the ratings and questionnaires are analyzed by an external expert.
Please contact Leigh Wells at lwells@communitywordproject.org with questions about our assessment protocols.

Our work with CWP helped with our Quality Review. It was used as evidence to prove we were doing what we said we were going to do.
